Newborn Baby/Infant

Newborn baby / infant circumcision (0-6 months)

PRACTISED FOR CENTURIES!

In 2012, after a comprehensive review of the scientific evidence, the American Academy of Pediatrics found the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks.

Although there are many medical advantages to circumcising a newborn boy, it is not required to do so and is left to the discretion of the parents.

Current techniques have evolved and are considered very safe. The Plasti-BellTM Technique can be safely performed up to approximately 6 months of age. The technique I have been using exclusively since 1999 involves true local anesthesia to freeze the penis. Many babies have in fact not moved, cried, and have even slept throughout the procedure.

As well, there is a sterile, disposable device used which both protects the tip of the penis from being damaged (which can occur with other techniques) and also prevents bleeding after the procedure.

Because no stitches are used with a Plasti-Bell™ there is no need for dressings or antibiotics. Post procedural instructions are simple and easy to follow for parent and child alike.

Your Questions Answered

With or without appointment during regular office hours from Monday to Friday, please call (514) 697-2402 or email us at info@circumcisiondr.com. Alternatively, you can present yourself to a hospital emergency department that manages pediatric patients.

Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time. You will be given some forms to fill while waiting to see the doctor. The average wait time is less than 10 minutes.

New infants and adult patients will be examined by the doctor during their preliminary visit.  All procedures are performed only by Dr. David Eiley, a board certified UROLOGIST at this same appointment. Dr. Eiley has performed over 10,000 procedures since 1999 using the Plasti-Bell™ technique.

We accept patients from all provinces and territories, with appointments 3-4 days per week.

Originally marketed in 1955, the Plasti-Bell™ is a disposable plastic bell-shaped object with a groove close to its edge. The bell is inserted into the preputial cavity (over the glans and under the foreskin) and a tight string is tied around the foreskin. Blood flow to the prepuce (Foreskin) tip is thereby restricted and the foreskin beyond the string falls off, providing a circumcision with no open wound to become irritated or infected. The string prevents bleeding at the circumcision line. In addition, because a plastic ring is utilized the cutline is always perfectly circular.

In summary, the advantages of this technique include:

  1. Hemostasis (prevention of bleeding)
  2. Protection of the penile head from being injured (as with other techniques)
  3. Single use device ensuring sterility
  4. Custom sizing of the plastic bell for the perfect fit (NOT “one size fits all”)
  5. Perfectly circular scar line

Yes. All new patients will be examined by Dr. Eiley at the clinic.

It takes only a few minutes to perform. You may remain present by your son’s side for the procedure or wait in the waiting room. You may give the nurse an extra diaper and pacifier if available

Approximately 3 weeks after the procedure, please present yourself during regular office hours with your son for a quick check, to ensure that the penis has healed well. An appointment is not necessary; however, we encourage you to call in advance to confirm the office hours.

  • Your son should feed and urinate as usual afterwards. In some instances, some infants can be cranky the day of the procedure.
  • There is no need to give any pain medications
  • You may wash the penis as usual (using soap, water, baby wipes, baths, etc.)
  • Several times per day, apply some Vaseline ointment around the tip of the penis with diaper changes (to protect it from the dirty diaper)
  • In approximately 4 to 9 days, the plastic ring around the tip of the penis will fall off in the diaper on its own. The ring may dangle at first. Do not pull it off; it will fall off on its own within one day. Along with the ring comes a small white string and the irregular skin left at the tip of the penis
  • If the ring does not fall off by the 10th day, or ‘slips’ back on the penis head or shaft earlier than day 10, please contact us immediately for a quick visit
  • The penis may look swollen (‘puffy’) while the ring is on and for up to 1 week after it falls off
  • There may be some white debris on the penis head or circumcision line for up to 2-3 weeks. It is normal and will go away on its own
  • Once the ring has fallen off, you may continue applying petroleum jelly for 1 week

The circumcision procedure is an elective procedure; thus, it is not covered by medical insurance or the government plan. For more information, please contact us at info@circumcisiondr.com or (514) 697-2402.

Toddlers/Children Circumcision
(6 months – 11 years)

Boys are born with a covering over the head of the penis (glans), which is called the prepuce, or foreskin. Circumcisions can be performed on toddlers and children of any age; however, the technique may vary according to the child’s age and size.

Please contact our office to discuss the surgical options.
